President-Elect Obama Lays a Wreath at the Bronze Soldiers Memorial in Chicago with Tammy Duckworth to Mark Veterans Day

Posted by Eugenia

To commemorate Veterans Day, President-Elect Barack Obama laid a wreath at the Bronze Soldiers Memorial in Chicago, accompanied by Iraq war veteran and director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs Tammy Duckworth (whom, as Ramey indicated earlier, is being considered for either the President-Elect’s old seat in the U.S. Senate or as Secretary of Veteran Affairs).

Here is also a video of the wreath-laying. No words, no music. Very powerful.

This is a truly moving tribute to our Veterans. And I’m thrilled that Veterans are pushing for Tammy Duckworth for VA Secretary. I met Tammy Duckworth when she was running for US Congress, but when I heard her speak at DNC 2008, and at the National Women’s Issues Conference, she took my breath away. Not only is she a fierce advocate for health care as a human right, she is “A True American s/Hero” who epitomizes the courage and compassion needed for this position. Appointing Duckworth to this position would be “TRANSCENDENT” and BREAK ALL STEREOTYPES. It would transform how America, women and heroes, see themselves. It would transform how the world views America, and how America views the world. No longer will people misperceive (as they did during WW II), that Asian Americans could not be trusted to defend America. Duckworth would be proof positive that “CHANGE” has come to America. That women and men are equals. That the color of one’s skin, does not, and should not, determine one’s character and loyalty to protect and defend humanity, in America, and throughout the world. Leadership is having the vision to use the present to create a better future, by correcting the injustices of the past. By appointing Duckworth, President Obama would change the America we love today, by defining America’s future, and the future of our free world.

I think the point above by Adam about how the current system weights a win over the Lions as more valuable than a win over the Titans for an NFC team is very strong. I’d favor a simple SOV tiebreaker–just total number of wins by all your opponents.
