McCain calls Obama “that one” during second presidential debate

Posted by Nina Moon

And I thought the town hall debate format was supposed to be McCain’s forte. Well, if that’s true, it certainly wasn’t tonight.

Case in point, while answering a question about alternative energy, McCain pointed to Obama (but didn’t look at him) and referred to him as “that one.”

Talk about dehumanizing and condescending. Talk about elitist and arrogant. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say it wasn’t meant to be racist even though pundits are already questioning whether it was, especially after his campaign’s recent attempts to frame Obama as an angry and unpatriotic radical. But whatever his intentions, McCain certainly isn’t going to win any likability points with that kind of unrestrained disdain. In a replay of the first debate, it was obvious that John McCain could barely stand to even look at Obama, much less refer to him properly. He obviously doesn’t like “that one” and doesn’t have the composure or self-control to contain it. He spent the greater part of the evening trying his darndest to rip into Obama, his face fixed in a perpetual sneer, except at the end of his answers when he’d suddenly smile and burst out with disconnected, upbeat phrases like, “We can do it!” and “We’ll get to work together!” It was bizarre, to say the least.

And I’m pretty sure McCain just guaranteed “that one” a win come November 4.

My favorite explanation of “that one” is my wife’s: McCain was having a “senior moment” and couldn’t remember “that one’s” name.

Tim, I agree with your wife on that one and also McCain can’t even look at Senator Obama. There is some serious issues with McCain. These negative ads are indicative of his personal opinion of minorities or people of color. In my eyes, McCain comes off as a racist. He has based his negative ads on his middle name Hussein, will McCain be a racist to all Americans with a foreign name?

[...] at Asian Americans for Obama about McCain’s snide gaffe during the last debate. You know, the one where he called Obama “that one.” If you weren’t as shocked and offended as I was when I heard that, then we need to sit down [...]

I must say, as very much as I enjoyed reading what you had to say, I couldnt help but lose interest after a while. Its as if you had a great grasp on the subject matter, but you forgot to include your readers. Perhaps you should think about this from extra than 1 angle. Or maybe you shouldnt generalise so substantially. Its better if you think about what others may have to say instead of just going for a gut reaction to the subject. Think about adjusting your very own believed process and giving others who may read this the benefit of the doubt.
