Judy Chu Wins!

Most material reposted from APA for Progress:

In the special election to replace recently appointed Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis in Congress in California’s 32nd Congressional District, California Board of Equalization Member and APAP PAC endorsed candidate Judy Chu has won the Democratic primary. With 75% of the precincts in, Chu leads her closest Democratic opponent, State Senator Gil Cedillo, by 3,300 votes, leading California political blog Calitics to call the race for her.

In California’s “jungle primary” system, all candidates for all parties are listed on a single ballot in the special election. If no single candidate gets over 50% of the vote, then the top vote-getters from the top two parties go to a run-off. Judy Chu will face Republican Monterey Park City Councilmember Betty Chu (and Judy’s cousin by marriage!) in the run-off. However, given the overwhelmingly Democratic bent of the district, most people consider Judy the presumptive next Congresswoman from CD32. Dr. Chu would be the first Chinese American woman in Congress.

Congratulations to Judy Chu!
