Jerry Kang on Obama, Ozawa, and Thind

Posted by Keith Kamisugi

This is from UCLA Asian American Studies Center director Don Nakanishi via Oiyan Poon: "UCLA Law Professor Jerry Kang wrote an insightful opinion piece in the National Law Journal, in which he draws parallels between Barack Obama’s recent speech on race, and two historically significant US Supreme Court cases, Ozawa v. U.S. and U.S. v. Thind, dealing with naturalization and race for early Asian immigrants."

Prof. Kang’s comparisons between the two cases and Obama’s speech on race is interesting, but it’s also fascinating to read the fundamental arguments of Ozawa and Thind, in which both Ozawa and Thind claimed that their ancestry qualified them as Caucasians.
