India Independence Day in Philadelphia - Aug. 16

This past weekend, AAPI grassroots groups hosted at least 16 voter registration events across 12 states.  Many of these events were planned to coincide with India’s and Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations.  Both nations became independent from Great Britain on August 15, 2008, though this year, many celebrations occurred on August 16 to take advantage of the weekend.

In my home in Austin, Texas, I volunteered at our Indian Independence Day celebration at a table for the Travis County Democratic Party, where we distributed literature on Sen. Obama and our Democratic candidates, signed up volunteers, and sold buttons and stickers.  We also helped the Indian American Community of Texas with voter registration.  Most of those eligible to vote were already registered, but we signed up several volunteers and many people took Obama bumper stickers and yard signs.  There was definitely a strong sense of support for Sen. Obama from the folks in attendance.

The Philadelphia grassroots activists were also out in force, taking advantage of all day celebrations in the Philly area.  They took some great pictures, which are in this post and continue below the fold.
