Most Diverse Convention in History

Posted by Asian Americans for Obama

With certification of all the delegates complete, this year’s Democratic National Convention is now officially the most diverse major party convention in history.

44.3 percent of the delegates represent minority communities, 50.1 percent are women, 14.5% are under the age of 36, and 16.9% are senior citizens.  The number of youth delegates this year is a marked increase.  And of particular interest to us here at Asian Americans for Obama is the fact that we also have a record number of AAPI delegates this year.  In fact, "[a]ccording to statistics compiled by the Democratic National Committee
(DNC), more women, African Americans, Asian and Pacific Islander
Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, GLBT delegates and delegates
with disabilities will attend the Convention than ever before."

These numbers not only reflect the amazing diversity of the Democratic Party in 2008, but are a testament to Sen. Obama’s tremendous ability to bring people of all backgrounds, walks of life, and perspectives together to move this country forward.  Change is no mere catchphrase this year; it is the political watchword and creed of every community in every corner of this nation.
