A beautiful testimonial from VA AAPI Field Director Bao Nguyen - thank you to Bao and to VA for making this happen! :)
This journey has been incredibly tiring and I have spent the last few days resting and reminiscing about it all. With that said, I wanted to thank you all for being part of this amazing journey. We were able to turn Virginia Blue for the first time in 44 years, we were able to put this country in the right direction again, and we were all a part of history as we helped elect the nation’s first African-American President. This could not have happened without all your efforts.
A lot of Asian Americans are traveling far from home to do everything they can in this crucial election. My friend Brian Kim, a Bay Area lawyer, traveled to Reno, Nevada last week to be a Democratic poll watcher at an early voting station. He wrote a great note about his experience, which I’m reproducing here with his permission.
Last Tuesday and Wednesday, I went to Washoe County, Nevada to do poll protection work for the Democratic Party. I decided to do it because I was driving myself crazy watching and thinking about the campaign 24-7 like everyone else I know. I really admired my friends (you know who you are) who have poured all of themselves into the Obama campaign, which because of work and family obligations I haven’t been able to do. I also wanted to do something for a targeted period of time where my training as a lawyer would have some value. Luckily, my boss had done poll protection in 2004 and he supported my decision to take days off for poll protection 100%.
I had a great time despite some long hours and tedium, and the experience made me think about voting in a way that I never had previously when I just cast my own ballot. It also made me appreciate those of you who are campaigning your hearts out and getting out the vote for Obama that much more.
It’s been an interesting week here in Florida, I’ve been here since last Sunday canvassing away. My roommate Jennifer arrived on Tuesday night, so it’s been nice to have a team since she arrived. I’ve met some great folks here like Arvind (below), who I got to talk to at the Boca Obama HQ today, so yah, I’m not the only Asian American volunteer in these parts! Arvind lives in the Boca Raton area, and has been volunteering on and off for about a month. Arvind told me “Obama is the right person for job, has sound judgment and he will change perceptions around the world that whatever you want to be, you can be…especially for poorest people. Plus, Obama will improve the image of the US around the world…Although with India, it won’t make much of a difference in our diplomatic relations due to the Pakistan issues, diplomacy could still improve with an Obama administration…I think Florida will go blue unless there is corruption again…” Arvind’s sentiments closely mirror what I’ve heard from a lot of folks here, of all ages, races and backgrounds….

I know this is not specifically Obama-related but it is… Obama has a very good record on LGBT rights, and most if not all in the LGBT activist community support him.
For those who consider ourselves “straight allies,” it was great to see this video by John Cho today. For everyone living in California, please spread the word and vote NO on Proposition 8. It is a very important issue.
Author David Mineta is a social worker in the San Francisco Bay Area and currently serves a president of the Jefferson Union High School District board of trustees.
Tonight at dinner, it became clear to me why Senator Barack Obama is the transformational leader our nation needs. Lauryn, our first grader, said that one of her classmates keeps telling her she was born in China. He’s been telling her this since last year in kindergarten. She always tells this classmate that she was born in Burlingame. As she told us this story, she covered her face with her arms. She continued to talk, but she covered her face from her mom, dad, and four-year-old brother.
Lauryn said that her other classmates also said that she was born in China. She said that she felt “weird” and didn’t like how she looked. The color of her skin, her hair, and the shape of her eyes (and she also has glasses) make her feel different. And being different is not particularly celebrated in all parts.
Sin Yen Ling is a civil rights attorney in San Francisco. Below is her account of voluteering in Nevada this past weekend.
Over the weekend, 20 of us drove out to Nevada and we all came back energized and enlightened with the incredible experiences over the two-day period. Half of us signed up for election protection and the other half did GOTV work in Fernley County — 1.5 hours outside of Reno.
I signed up for election protection and was assigned to Shopper’s Square. Nevada opened up its early voting on Saturday and the turnout was incredible the first day — each site had 300 plus people show up totally engaged and with lots to say. Nov. 4 will have massive turnout in Nevada because of the number of undecided voters.
I went in with expectations of wondering why people were still undecided. What in the last eight years could make someone undecided about either voting or about choosing a candidate was beyond me. But I was wrong, so wrong to even contemplate that. The common reason behind people’s indecision had to do with their distrust for government.
On Friday, October 17, Asian Americans for Obama had the privilege of speaking with pioneering comedian, actress, blogger, and activist Margaret Cho. A Korean American from San Francisco, CA, Cho has not only had a trailblazing and accomplished career, including winning an American Comedy Award, her critically acclaimed one woman shows, and her newest project, The Cho Show on VH1, but she has also been an outspoken and passionate advocate for equal rights for women, the LGBT community, and Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders. Cho endorsed Sen. Obama in early 2008.
Let’s see how this McCain alert system fares in these last three weeks of campaign hijinks.
With Obama’s impressive lead in every single poll out there, I suspect we’ll be looking at a lot of panicked and alarmed reactions by the McCain/Palin machine. Though, it would be smartest if they do what Kristol advises: fire the campaign. Read the rest of this entry »
Musician and producer Dave Stewart has created one of the latest Obama viral videos - an inspiring music video called “American Prayer,” which features numerous actors and musicians, including Whoopi Goldberg, Forest Whitaker, Macy Gray, Jason Alexander, and Margaret Cho.
Check it out:
Stewart writes, “Regardless of what happens in November, Senator Obama has reminded millions of people that they have the power to connect to bigger ideas. He is, in essence, the embodiment of a new anthem for change. He has continued King’s narrative from what was once thought of as a dream to a reality.”
