March is Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day was celebrated recently on March 8. To mark the celebration of women this month, President Obama signed an order yesterday creating the White House Council on Women and Girls. Its first chair is Valerie Jarrett, Obama’s senior adviser and close confidant. The purpose of the council is to “provide a coordinated federal response to the challenges confronted by women and girls and to ensure that all Cabinet and Cabinet-level agencies consider how their policies and programs impact women and families.”

In a long awaited move, President Obama signed an executive order today reversing the last Administration’s policy of restricting federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. The order was also accompanied by a memorandum containing addressing the issue of insulating government scientific agencies from political influence after numerous complaints from the scientific community that federal science and research policy has become highly politicized in recent years by the Bush Administration.
