Today, Cambodians, Thai, and Laotians all over the world are celebrating the new year - 2553 BE (Buddhist Era). So from all of us here at Asian Americans for Obama, Happy New Year!
Here’s a great article that describes the Cambodian New Year from remarks given by Leng Lim, Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Khmer Community in Seattle, WA, at a New Year’s celebration in 2001.
And here’s Secretary Clinton’s New Year’s message to the people of Cambodia.
The Huffington Post recently ran a poll for folks to vote on who they think is the hottest member of the White House team. The winner, with 26.06% of the vote, was Reggie Love, Obama’s “body guy” and former Duke basketball player.
But among the hottest, with 10.53% of the vote, was Asian American and Obama political adviser extraordinaire, Eugene Kang. 25 and with a killer putt, he’s definitely among the most eligible bachelors in the new Administration. And oh yes, ladies, he is single.
In a bit of fashion news, First Lady Michelle Obama is featured on the cover of the March edition of Vogue. According to the BBC, Michelle is the second First Lady to be featured on the cover (which is usually reserved for models) since Hillary Rodham Clinton in 1998. The dress that Michelle is wearing was designed once again by Jason Wu, who also designed the memorable white gown that she wore during the inauguration balls.
Also enjoy this brief slideshow of the president and the First Lady at Vogue’s web site.
This story has been making the rounds - it’s been reported that President-Elect Barack Obama kicked off his vacation in Hawai’i on Sunday with a game of golf, accompanied by political aide, Eugene Kang. According to the President-Elect, Eugene’s got game! Read more here and here from The Washington Post! (And find out what Eugene’s nickname is here. )
I am working on a book called Kids’ Letters to President Obama.
We are looking for letters from children ages 5 - 15, and I thought that this might be a fun activity for children. We’re very excited about Kids’ Letters to President Obama, which will be published by Random House in 2009.
Children can write a letter to Barack Obama that is up to a page long. The letter can be about anything he or she would like to say to the new President. Letters could give the President advice, or talk about problems that the President should address, or ask Obama questions about his childhood or why he wanted to be president. Or the letter could be about your own child life and feelings about the future. In short, whatever kids are interested in is fine for a letter.
