“In Tagalog, ‘Obama’ Means Hope.”

Posted by Angelica Jongco

(SAN FRANCISCO) - Tuesday night, more than 150 community leaders, advocates, elected officials, artists and professionals rallied together in downtown San Francisco to launch the efforts of Filipinos for Obama to unify the pinoy vote behind Barack Obama.  Filipinos for Obama is a Bay Area-based grassroots organization founded to mobilize pinoys nationally in support of Senator Obama.

"We want to make the case for why Barack Obama is the best candidate for Filipino Americans and the strongest leader for addressing our issues, such as immigration reform, affordable healthcare and equity for Filipino veterans," said Rich Pio Roda, a field organizer for Filipinos for Obama.  At their first event, just over a week ago, Filipinos for Obama marched and registered dozens of voters at the 15th Annual Pistahan Parade in San Francisco.

Filipinos for Obama March for Hope

Posted by Angelica Jongco

March
The Filipinos for Obama effort hit the streets this past Saturday to spread the message that Senator Obama is the candidate for the Filipino American Community.  With a large contingent, the FFO campaign passed out "Filipinos for Obama" stickers and buttons, and energized the crowed chanting "YES WE CAN" at Pistahan, a jam-packed Filipino culture festival and parade in San Francisco. Obama Greets Filipinos Worldwide on Philippine Independence Day

Posted by Angelica Jongco

Chicago, IL — Senator Obama released the following statement today on Philippine Independence Day.

"After hundreds of years of struggle for independence, the Filipino people declared their independence from Spain on June 12, 1898, and the first Philippine republic was born.

“The Philippines has been a staunch partner of the United States through the Cold War and the war against terrorism. In part because of our shared history, we cannot ignore the fact that the Philippines continues to confront many difficult challenges, including persistent poverty, natural disasters, and political division. But as a nation rich in natural and human resources, with a proud legacy as the first democracy in Asia, the Philippines also holds great opportunities and hope for the future.  An ongoing challenge of the 21st century will be to ensure that these opportunities to make a better life are open to all.  I look forward to working with the Filipino people and their government, as part of the global community, to combat poverty and generate wealth, build healthy and educated communities, and change the odds for generations to come.”

… and Philippine Independence Day!

Posted by Angelica Jongco

Today is also Philippine Independence Day–the day Filipinos first declared their independence from 3 centuries of Spanish rule.  Sadly, the first Philippine republic was short-lived because of American intervention–the Philippines became a U.S. colony after the brutal Philippine-American War (in which U.S. troops first got to practice ‘waterboarding’).  Finally, on July 4, 1946, the Philippines  became an independent nation.  Filipinos worldwide celebrate their independence day, however, on June 12 to commemorate the heroism of Filipino revolutionaries in the long struggle for freedom against centuries of foreign occupants.

Obama’s Victory is a Victory for All Asian American Pacific Islanders

Posted by Angelica Jongco

Obama made history when he became the presumptive Democratic Party nominee for the president of the United States. The first African American becoming the nominee of a major party for a presidential race has important consequences for Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI). Obama’s victory broke an important racial barrier for all of us and struck major fissures in the outdated definitions of “American.”

Asian Heritage Street Fair in San Francisco

"Step right up and spin the Obama wheel," barked enthusiastic Obama volunteer Patrick Wong at yesterday’s Asian Heritage Street Fair in Japantown, San Francisco.  Our Obama booth was a big hit –  we had over 20 volunteers helping to register new voters, pass out AAPIs for Obama stickers and buttons , and entertain folks with a fun game of chance dreamed up by gamemaster Patrick.

A diverse group of volunteers registered 73 voters, signed up 35 new
supporters, collected over $300 in donations, and passed out over 200
Obama stickers, t-shirts and AAPIs for Obama buttons. And by the end of
the day, we still had people coming by begging for shirts and signs.
Everyone we registered will be eligible to vote in California’s June
3rd election–and of course, in November.  Obama supporters and SF
School Board Members Eric Mar, Jane Kim and Board President Mark
Sanchez (pictured) came by the booth to say hello and show supportAsian_heritage_street_fair.
