Economy May Delay Special Election for Solis’s Seat

Posted by rko

Cross-posted from AAA-Fund Blog:

AAA-Fund endorsee Dr. Judy Chu’s bid to succeed Rep. Hilda Solis may have to wait a month (or two).

With one exception (see below), a special election must be held about ten weeks after a vacancy opens up. Originally, we expected that Rep. Solis would be confirmed U.S. Labor Secretary by early February. For this reason, everyone believed the special election would be called for April. Then two things happened. First, a few GOP Senators delayed Rep. Solis’ confirmation hearing. After a groundswell of national support, she is now expected to be confirmed next week — pushing the race to replace her to May.

Then California’s budget crisis (any takers for a $42 billion deficit?) took center stage. If a complex (and painful) deal is approved, there will be a statewide special election in May or June (the Sacramento Bee is guessing May 19).

Chuck Schumer Recommends Preet Bharara as Next U.S. Attorney in Manhattan

Posted by Eugenia

According to the New York Times, NY Senator Senator Charles E. Schumer has recommended that the White House select his chief counsel, Preet Bharara, as the next United States attorney in Manhattan. According to the Times article,

Bharara, 40, was a federal prosecutor in New York from 2000 to 2005, handling organized crime and narcotics cases, among others. But he emerged more prominently in Washington after he became Mr. Schumer’s top aide on the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2005.

There, he played a key role in investigating the scandal over the dismissals of United States attorneys in 2006, including some who were removed for political reasons.

The committee’s investigation ultimately led to the resignation of Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales in 2007.

Schumer’s recommendation makes Bharara the frontrunner for the position, although if he is nominated by President Obama, he will be have to be confirmed by the Senate.

First Lady Michelle Obama on the Cover of March Edition of Vogue

Posted by Eugenia

In a bit of fashion news, First Lady Michelle Obama is featured on the cover of the March edition of Vogue. According to the BBC, Michelle is the second First Lady to be featured on the cover (which is usually reserved for models) since Hillary Rodham Clinton in 1998. The dress that Michelle is wearing was designed once again by Jason Wu, who also designed the memorable white gown that she wore during the inauguration balls.

Also enjoy this brief slideshow of the president and the First Lady at Vogue’s web site.

House, Senate Negotiators Reach Agreement on Stimulus

Posted by Eugenia

Senator Daniel Inouye (one of the key negotiators) has this to say:

“We do not have the luxury of time,” said Sen. Daniel K. Inouye (D-Hawaii), another key negotiator. “We must expeditiously face the facts and pass this measure. To delay this any further would lead to consequences that could be horrendous.”

Inouye said more delay “could lead to a crisis worse than the Great Depression.” And, since the United States is now the world’s only superpower, “if we go down, there’ll be chaos on this globe,” he said.

Boston City Councilor Sam Yoon running for Mayor

Posted by cmoon

Sam Yoon, the Korean American city councilor from Boston, has announced that he will join Boston’s mayoral race for Mayor Thomas Menino’s seat in 2010.  Yoon was Boston’s first Asian American city councilor and, if elected, would be Boston’s first non-Caucasian mayor.  Coverage so far in the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald following Yoon’s announcement Monday is calling the mayoral big “historic”!

This post by Eugenia in October links to an article in Dong-An Ilbo about the role of Korean-Americans in Obama’s presidential campaign, including Yoon.
