Help the Victims of the Disasters in Asia

Many of you have probably been following the tragic events in Burma and China.  Burma was recently hit by a terrible cyclone that may have resulted in over 100,000 deaths and over 2 million left homeless.  Earlier today, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit near Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China.  Reports are still coming in, but the death toll could easily climb to over 10,000, with many more injured and homeless.  In some cities, 80% of the structures have been destroyed.

One of my good friends is a reporter for an international new agency in China.  Just 30 minutes ago, she described a chilling image to me in an e-mail - a school yard filled with hundreds of dead bodies of children, each with a set of mourning parents.  She said the sound of sorrow is unbearable.

Sen. Obama and his campaign are calling on all of us to help.  You can give to disaster relief efforts at www.RedCross.org.  Right now, the Red Cross site is apparently overloaded, so another good option is Doctors Without Borders.  As Sen. Obama is committed to healing so much of the hurt that has been visited on this world, we can do our part as citizens of both America and the globe.  Whether you give 5 cents or 5 hundred dollars, every gesture is meaningful to someone in need.

Senator Daniel Akaka endorses Obama!

And that's another Super going our way! Read his endorsement statement here.

Myth of the White Working Man

“My supporters are racist,” explained Hillary Clinton on why she was the best candidate to be the Democratic nominee.  This biting impersonation by Amy Poehler on Saturday Night Live struck me more sad than funny.  Like any successful satire, it directly grabs and shoves it in your face the popular notion of the white working class as generally racist.  According to legend, President Lyndon B. Johnson, shortly after signing the Civil Rights Bill of 1964, had commented, “We have the lost the South for a generation.”   Since Johnson, significant white working class majorities have eluded every Democratic presidential candidate.   However, white working families are not unthinking automons driven by their fear of the “black man.”  Like Obama surmised, white working people’s experience “is the immigrant experience -- as far as they're concerned, no one's handed them anything, they've built it from scratch.”

Obama gains superdelegate lead

For the first time in the 2008 Democratic primary race, Sen. Barack Obama has finally overcome his Democratic superdelegate deficit, and now leads, 277 to 274.5. The candidate also leads by well over 750,000 popular votes and triple digits in pledged delegates. The Associated Press has him leading by 1,588.5 delegates in total, to 1425.5 for Sen. Clinton.

Breaking: Hawaii Congresswoman Mazie Hirono Endorses Sen. Obama!

Since Tuesday's results further reinforced Sen. Obama's near insurmountable lead in the Democratic contest, superdelegates all over the country have been steadily announcing their support for Obama.  In at least one case, Rep. Donald Payne of New Jersey, the superdelegate switched his support from Clinton to Obama.  By at least some calculations (notably ABC News), Sen. Obama now leads Sen. Clinton in superdelegates.

Of particular interest and excitement to us here at Asian Americans for Obama is news that Congresswoman Mazie Hirono of Hawaii (one of the first two Buddhists elected to the US Congress, along with Hank Gilbert of Georgia, in 2006) has endorsed Sen. Obama in an announcement today from Washington:

"Today I announce my endorsement of Senator Barack Obama for President of the United States. I do so after watching these historic campaigns unfold across our country, where hundreds of thousands of people participated as never before. It is clear that Americans want our country back on a course of hope and opportunity.

I make my announcement with deep respect and admiration for Hillary Clinton. She is an extraordinary woman. However, it is time to unite the party behind Senator Obama and to use our energy and resources to defeat Senator John McCain. Barack Obama can unite our Party and our country and bring about the positive changes Americans want.

Of course, all of us are especially proud of Senator Obama's deep roots here in our state, and overwhelmingly embraced his candidacy in our recent caucus. His love for Hawaii and understanding of its diversity have given him a foundation for understanding the diversity of our country.

I am proud to endorse Senator Obama and I look forward to a winning campaign."

Congresswoman Hirono joins fellow Hawaii Congressman and superdelegate Neil Abercrombie in supporting Sen. Obama.  You can send a word of appreciation and thanks to Congresswoman Hirono here.  You can help with her re-election by visiting her campaign website and signing up to volunteer or give money.

For Sen. Obama's thank you, go below the fold.

Obama the Organizer! / Hillary the Uniter?

After North Carolina and Indiana’s primaries, predictability settles in with the rest of the race.  Clinton will win West Virginia, Kentucky and Puerto Rico but not with the large margins she needs. Obama will win Oregon, South Dakota, and Montana.  The proportional system of the primaries negates any mathematical equation that erases Obama’s lead in pledged delegates.  Obama’s North Carolina victory secures his edge in the popular vote.  Clinton and undeclared superdelegates continue to move toward Obama while not a single Obama superdelegate has defected to Clinton (Former Clinton supporter George McGovern’s switch to Obama and call for Hillary to drop out of the race is one of the latest).  The numbers are clearly on Obama’s side and his declared next steps highlights the type of leadership we should expect in the general election and the White House.   It also calls the question on Hillary Clinton and us.

Your Help Needed for the Final Push!

There are just a few more hours before the polls close in Indiana and North Carolina.  If you're in one of those two states and have not voted yet - get out there before the polls close.  Polls close at 6:00 PM in Indiana and 7:30 PM in North Carolina (if you're in line by the closing time, you have the right to vote).  As the Supreme Court's decision recently reminded us, Indiana has a stringent voter ID law, so remember to bring valid identification.  The Obama campaign has more info here on what to bring to the polls in Indiana.  (And here for North Carolina.)

If you're not in those two states or have already voted, we need your help to get out the vote for Barack!  The Indiana offices are calling all volunteers to get to their local office and help make phone calls and turn out our voters.

We're also less than 35,000 calls away from 1,000,000 supporter calls to voters.  Visit the online phone banking page to help meet this historic goal.

Breaking News: Obama Wins Guam!

With the last village in, Sen. Obama has officially won Guam's party caucus (which operates more like a primary in many ways) with 2,264 votes to Clinton's 2,257.  The newly elected party chair and vice chair team of Pilar Lujan and Jaime Paulino will also be superdelegates for Obama.

Guam has 8 pledged delegates with half a vote each.  I don't have the official breakdown yet, but Obama and Clinton will likely split the pledged delegates with Obama picking up two overall with the superdelegates from Guam included.

Thanks so much to all the volunteers from all over who took time to help call Guam, and special thanks to Ria Baldevia who helped set up the easy to use calling tool (and helped open the first ever presidential campaign office in Guam).

According to supporter Grande Lum, "The campaign ran ads and Barack did a radio interview in Guam yesterday and emphasized that he will address the special concerns of the Chamorro people."  To hear his interview, entitled 'Sen. Obama Supports Guam’s Quest for Self-Determination,' visit this link.

Obama Statement on APA Heritage Month

Statement on Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

Chicago, IL  -- Senator Barack Obama today released the following letter commemorating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

Dear Friends,

The month of May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month – a time to honor and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of the nearly 13 million Asian and Pacific Americans (AAPI) who have helped build a strong and vibrant America.  The APA community represents many ethnicities and languages that span across generations, and their shared achievements are an important part of the American experience. The APA story and community are also personal to me.  Members of my family are of Asian descent and it is a community that I became a part of while growing up in Hawaii and Indonesia and living in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.  APA Heritage Month reminds us of our commonalities in history, the values that bring us together and how Asian Pacific Americans will shape America's future.

Beyond acknowledging the contributions of the APA community, APA Heritage Month is also an opportunity for us to recognize the challenges we still face.  Our nation is at war, our planet is in peril, and for increasing numbers of Americans of Asian and Pacific descent, the American dream is in danger of slipping away. As President, I will work with the APA community to ensure that all Americans have access to quality, affordable and portable healthcare that will also reduce the language and cultural barriers that limit access to our medical system.  We will make sure the global economy works for APAs by fixing our public education system, making college affordable through an annual $4,000 tax credit, and equipping our workers with the skills and training they need to compete.  We will invest in renewable energy, which will ease our rising fuel costs while also saving our planet.  We will do more to support small businesses, including strengthening programs that provide capital to minority-owned businesses.  We will develop comprehensive immigration reforms that strengthen our security while affirming our heritage as a nation of immigrants, and reach.  We will restore our Constitution and the rule of law, including our commitment to human rights abroad and civil liberties at home.  Finally, we must forge a more effective regional framework for collective security in Asia and the Pacific to promote political and economic stability, confront transnational threats like terrorism and influenza, and collectively address environmental concerns.

With your support, I am confident that we can address these challenges.  I am thankful to the many leaders, campaign organizers and grassroots volunteers of Asian and Pacific descent across the country, who have
registered thousands of new voters, conducted phone-banking, organized canvassing trips, hosted political events, translated campaign materials into numerous Asian languages, and much more.  By reaching
out directly to the APA community, we can ensure that APAs are well represented in this national conversation about our future and the movement to write our destiny.

So, as we celebrate APA Heritage Month, let us honor the achievements of Asian Pacific Americans who have contributed so much to the success and prosperity of our nation, and who must be a part of our effort to change America.

The story of the APA community is quintessential American story about drawing strength from our diversity to achieve extraordinary things.  With your continued energy, enthusiasm, passion and activism, the change we seek is within reach.

Sincerely,
Barack Obama

Vote for Change National Registration Drive - Sat, May 10

On Saturday, May 10, volunteers will kick off a historic 50-state voter registration drive called Vote for Change.  As many people know, Sen. Obama was once a grassroots community organizer, and one of his inspiring accomplishments was Project Vote, "a massive voter registration drive that helped change the political landscape of Chicago."  Many Chicago politicians credit Obama's effort for contributing significantly to the election of Chicago's reformist first black mayor, Harold Washington.

As a further testament to the values of unity, inclusion, diversity, and change that have characterized this campaign, the Obama team is pushing to bring disengaged, disillusioned, and disenfranchised people into the process and change the equation.  So visit the Vote for Change page and find out how you can get involved in your area!

An event is already planned for San Francisco.  Details after the jump.  Check back here for updates on additional events around the country.

North Carolina Needs You!

With 115 pledged delegates, North Carolina is the biggest state remaining on the Democratic primary calendar.  A strong victory there on Tuesday, May 6, would virtually guarantee Sen. Obama a pledged delegate lead at the end of the primary season, not to mention erase any gains made by Sen. Clinton in Pennsylvania.

Polling has consistently shown Sen. Obama in the lead, but with aggressive campaigning in the final days, the gap is closing and Sen. Clinton will continue to do everything she can to remain in this race.  As in so many other states, this one is going to come down to the organization and ground game, and our folks need your help!  Sign up today to volunteer in North Carolina!

Visit http://my.barackobama.com/page/s/cometonc to provide your information to the campaign, and a local organizer in NC will get in touch with you on details, including transportation and housing.

If you can't make it to North Carolina in person, your help is still needed to phone bank from home.  The North Carolina team has set up a great online tool to let you call from home at http://my.barackobama.com/ncvols. By making just 50 calls (takes about 2 hours), we can give the team on the ground a huge boost before election day on May 6.  Let's get out there and win this one for Obama, and then on to victory in November!

Last Day to Register to Vote in Oregon Primary!

Today, April 29, is the last day to register to vote (or change your party affiliation to Democrat) in order to be eligible to participate in the Oregon Democratic primary on May 20.

Anyone who is a resident of Oregon and will be 18 years old on or before May 20, 2008, can register for the primary.  Remember, Oregon is a completely vote by mail system, so you must re-register if your permanent or mailing address has changed since you last registered.  You should also re-register if you have not voted for the last five years or more.  Oregon is a CLOSED primary, meaning that only people registered as Democrats can vote in the Democratic primary, so voters should also check to make sure they have the correct party registration by today.

For more information, visit the Oregon Secretary of State's website or your local Oregon for Obama field office.

If you're already registered, you can help make sure others are registered by the deadline today by helping to call Oregon residents using the campaign's online Oregon phone banking tool.

Help Phone Bank for the Guam Primary!

From Grande Lum and Nan Santiago:

We are phone banking for next primary - Guam!

We're working with the Obama Guam Coordinator Ria Baldevia and calling people in Guam right now. Ria has created a great script for the calls, so it is very easy to make the calls. If you have AT&T or Sprint wireless, nationwide plans include Guam. AT&T and other landline nationwide plans include Guam as well.  Guam is 18 hours ahead of the pacific time zone, so best times to call will be between 3 pm -3 am pacific daylight time (9am-9pm Guam time).

If you are interested in helping out, please let Grande know at grande@accordence.com or 650-340-9150. We basically need volunteer callers between now and Friday May 2 (which is May 3 in Guam). Please do forward this to others who may be interested as well.

Senate Finally Acts to Honor Promises to WWII Filipino Veterans

Senator Obama reaffirmed his support for the rights of Filipino veterans and all veterans today, following the historic Senate passage of the Veterans' Benefits Enhancement Act (S.1315):
Antonino_taperla_2
"This legislation ... makes good on our promises to Filipino veterans who served bravely alongside American service members during World War II. Nearly 250,000 Filipinos assisted Americans during the war, but for far too long, these heroes have been denied benefits they are owed. This bill will finally provide surviving veterans and their survivors with the benefits they were promised so many years ago."

This is a historic victory in a long fought struggle. Our country owes a great debt to the Filipino veterans who fought alongside American soldiers during World War II. There's still work to do to get the House on board. Some of the fiercest advocates are the veterans themselves, like Mr. Antonin Taperla (pictured above with Candida Idolor) who I met at the California Democratic Convention. For more information, about their struggle to win the benefits that were promised to them when they took up arms for our country, please visit the National Alliance for Filipino Veterans Equity.

Congressman David Wu Endorses Obama for President!

David_wu_2007_169x222 Today, U.S. Congressman David Wu of Oregon, whose primary is Tuesday, May 20th, endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president.  Congressman Wu is one of six members of the House of Representatives of Asian American descent.

Oregonians have until Tuesday, April 29th, to register to vote in the primary.  If you and anyone you know has not yet registered or needs to update their registration, visit this link.

The press release:

PORTLAND, ORToday U.S. Congressman David Wu from Oregon announced his support for Senator Barack Obama for president, citing his ability to make real change:

"I think we are blessed to have two strong candidates for president," Congressman David Wu said.  "I am endorsing Barack Obama for president today because I believe that he is best suited to turn the page on this sorry episode in American history.  He and I both had the judgment to oppose the Iraq War from the very beginning.

"Every dollar that we have spent in Iraq—which adds up to over $500 billion so far—is a dollar not spent at home, a school not built, a bridge not repaired," continued Wu.  "We need new policies both at home and abroad.  Like Americans, the international community wants to see real change in America and I believe that Senator Obama embodies that change."

“I thank Congressman Wu for his support, and look forward to working with him to bring this war in Iraq to an end, strengthening our economy and addressing the issue of climate change,” said Senator Barack Obama.

Congressman Wu is in his fifth term representing Oregon’s First Congressional District.

Wu is Senator Obama’s 240th  Superdelegate endorsement. Senator Obama is now 291 delegates away from winning the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.

After Pennsylvania: What Really Matters?

Hillary Clinton won Pennsylvania and now all the pundits ponder the meaning of 10 points--the new numerology for the new millennium.  Some try to read the minds of the "bitter" white working class.  Some conclude that there is a winning magic in the dark arts of negative campaigning.  Some dismiss Clinton’s victory as an illusion and others praise her miraculous comeback onto the stage. Frankly, after spending last week away from the elections and marching 28 miles with thousands of different workers in  Los Angeles, I find this whole show to be really ridiculous. It is too easy to be caught up in this superbowl of elections and its recent devolution to “kitchen-throwing” game play and forget what this race is really about. For some of us, this election is not about whose more electable but something deeper.

Obama Continues To Lead This Race

Pennsylvania predictably went with its native daughter tonight, but based on early returns, the win was not enough to catch up to Barack Obama, who continues to lead the race in delegates, the popular vote and number of states won.

One analyst did the math factoring in the delegates won tonight and said "it now appears that it's going to be impossible for Obama to lose his lead" among pledged delegates.

Anna Perng, Matthew Chea, Nina Ahmad, Van Tamom and the entire Pennsylvania Asian Americans for Obama team did an outstanding job against incredible odds. And based on early ward breakdowns in Philadelphia, we'll see their impact on helping win the vote for Obama in entire sections of the city.

Sen. Obama continued to inspire thousands of new voters in Pennsylvania to participate in the political process -- new voters who will be crucial allies for change in the general election when the electorate will be faced with choosing the Republican flag bearer of the old Washington and Barack Obama, who represents a new and better path towards moving our country forward.

Volunteers Reach Out to Philadelphia from Chinatown Office

Casperr, a Daily Kos diarist, has given our Philly grassroots team a terrific shout out by posting a diary about the diverse group of volunteers that worked out of the Chinatown office the last couple of days.

Again, a big thanks to our very own Nina Ahmad, Matt Chea, and Anna Perng who have been leading the grassroots effort our in Philly (and are pictured in the diary), as well as the inestimable Van Tamom, Pennsylvania AAPI Outreach Director for the Obama campaign, who I had the distinct pleasure of working with in Texas.  Connecticut State Rep. Taiwan for Obama?

It may not be the type of fervor we see in Obama, Japan, but some Taiwanese would prefer to see Barack Obama as the next US president. This is the island, after all, where the majority of Democratic American expatriates voted for the Illinois senator. Either way, many Taiwanese, despite support from Republican administrations in the past, now feel that it's in their best interest to have a Democrat in office.

Rediff.com, an India-based web portal, did an interesting profile on an Obama advisor:

"If Obama's amazing run can be credited to his team, it is heartening to note that the second in command in the area of immigration is an Indian American, Preeta Bansal. The 42-year-old lawyer is a partner at Skadden, Arps, slate, Meagher & Fom in New York City...

Preeta Bansal advises Obama on international human rights, legal issues, foreign policy, women's issues, and outreach to Asian-Americans. He is 'able to advance progressive principles, but he's not one of those starry-eyed liberals,' Bansal told the publication, National Journal. 'With him, two plus two equals five, not four. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts."

Learn How to Be a Delegate to the DNC

For young AAPIs seeking to be delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Denver, the DNC Youth Council is holding a series of teleconference trainings.  The information from the Council and a downloadable document on the process are available below:

One of the goals of the DNC's Youth Council is to increase the number of young delegates (those under 36) to the Democratic National Convention. We have already held several conference call trainings on the process to be a delegate. The trainings were extremely successful and we are eager to get underway with our next round of calls.

Below one will find a listing of some of our upcoming calls. Please spread the word to as many people as possible about these. On each call we will be joined by a member of that respective state's party to go over the process to be a Congressional District, PLEO, or At-Large delegate to the Democratic National Convention. In addition to the specific training, we will be sure to provide information on how to get more involved with the State Party and other youth organizations. (If you or your organization have specific information you would like to have mentioned, please email me and let me know as soon as possible.)

The upcoming calls are:

We canvassed two huge events (Cambodian Lunar New Year at a Cambodian temple; Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival with over two thousand people). South Asians For Obama (SAFO) held two Town Halls on Health Care with over 100 people in attendance.

Korean Americans for Obama held a press event with six Korean newspapers and successfully raised money to buy ads through the week. Asian Pacific Americans for Progress held its free tax clinic, receiving plenty of press on KYW radio and local papers.

And yes, our very own Matt Chea was on Voice of Khmer, talking about Barack about health care!

Our two Japanese volunteers also did visibility and even met Michelle Obama at Haverford College. "

Asian Americans Rally for Obama Before PA Debate

Asian American supporters were out in force for Sen. Obama today at the pre-debate visibility rally.  (The debate, incidentally, was apparently horrible.  I didn't get to see it.)  Matt Chea and the Asian Americans for Obama team in Philly sent us these pictures.

Make Calls to AAPIs in Pennsylvania for Barack!

Last week, the campaign announced its Asian American Online Phone Banking tool for Pennsylvania.  The tool enables AAPI supporters across the country to call Asian American voters in the following ethnic groups:  Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and South Asian voters.

The campaign has had a great response, but with only a week left and so much at stake in the Pennsylvania primary, more help is always needed!  They want your help – as well as the help of your friends and colleagues – to reach out to AAPI voters in the critical last week and a half in Pennsylvania.  They are especially looking for Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Cambodian callers, who can use the online tool.

Anyone who wants to call and has not yet signed up should email Van Tamom, AAPI Outreach Director for Pennsylvania, at vtamom@barackobama.com with their name and email address and he can set you up.  We are doing calls 10am – 9pm EST.

California AAPI Delegate Math

AAPI's did great this past Sunday at the California Democratic Caucuses to elect district-level delegates.  Out of the 241 delegates elected, I estimate that there were about 15 AAPI's elected as delegates for both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.  For Obama, I counted about 7 AAPI elected district-level delegates.  Congrats to all, especially since they were really competitive contests!  In CD 33, my district, some candidates were running radio ads!!!

Anyway, I did some research on the process to select at-large and PLEO (Party leader and elected official) delegates.  Here's what I found, particularly as it pertains to AAPI's in California interested in going to Denver to represent Obama!

These ballpark figures are based on the estimate that there were 15 AA/PI elected this past Sunday, and doesn't include alternates.

  • Given the affirmative action goals articulated by the state party of 9% AA/PI, the 241 district-level delegates should aim to select at least an additional 18 AA/PI delegates through the at-large and PLEO process.
  • "At-Large Delegates are confirmed by a vote of the 241 District-Level Delegates at the Statewide Delegation Meeting on May 18." (cadem.org)
  • The ball park breakdown, assuming there needs to be proportional representation for each candidate based on Feb. 5 results, should break out like this at the end of the process to select at-large and PLEO delegates:
    • 8 additional AAPI delegates for Obama (5 at-large and 3 PLEO)
    • 10 additional AAPI delegates for Clinton (6 at-large and 4 PLEO)

Of course at the end of the day with all the affirmative action goals and the rule that the gender split needs to be even, I won't try to venture a guess as to how many of our 8 Obama AAPI delegates will need to be women v. men.

For more info on the at-large and PLEO process and for application forms, go here. The deadline to apply is April 23.

For a list of AAPI's elected as district-level delegates this past Sunday, keep reading...

Volunteer for Final Week of APA Outreach for Pennsylvania Primary!

From super volunteer Elizabeth in NYC:

Dear NYC Asian American Outreach Team,

This is it – the FINAL WEEK before the Pennsylvania Primary!  I'm nervous.  Remember, the key is to maintain, if not INCREASE, Obama's popular vote lead as well as pledged delegate lead.  And to do this, he needs you!  Two weeks ago, polls, assuming you can believe them in this primary season, had Clinton ahead by 16%.  This week, her lead has dropped to 6%.  Can we win PA?  I hope so and we are sure going to try!  I hope that you will join us in some of them so that Obama win once and for all!

1.       Asian American Outreach in Philly this Weekend (April 19 & 20) & Free Housing

2.       Asian American Phonebanking at Virginia Davies' House this Weekend

Diverse Coalition of Obama Supporters Provide Free Tax Clinic

Img_1221On Saturday April 12, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., a group of volunteers, community leaders and elected officials who embrace Presidential Candidate Senator Barack Obama's message of inclusion and empowerment provided a free tax clinic targeting those Philadelphians (earning between $3,000-8,750) who traditionally do not file for taxes.

In the spirit of Obama's commitment to inclusion and grassroots community empowerment the primary organizers of this event, Asian Pacific Americans for Progress (a grassroots, internet-empowered, national network of Asian Pacific Americans and allies for Progressive Action), United People for Obama (Philadelphia Coalition of diverse Obama Supporters), Solutions for Progress (a technology public policy company who specializes in anti-poverty software) kicked off activities with a multicultural opening ceremony of a dragon dance and prayer from Reverend Shine and opening words from Pennsylvania Senator Vincent Hughes.

Working People: The Real Casualties of Hillary's Finger-Pointing

We have become vultures over the carcass of intelligent discourse. Once again, Hillary has swept down on the words of Obama, this time labeling him an “elitist” while regaling us with tales of her youth shooting a gun with her father. The traditional rules of campaign engagement forces us to substitute substantive discussion with fingerpointing and selective listening. Oddly enough, Obama was repeating an analysis that has circulated throughout the Democratic Party including by the Clintons themselves for the last few years. (From the white labor movement's advocacy of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act to the 1990's beating of Chinese American Vincent Chin by two white autoworkers who blamed the loss of their jobs on Japan, history has shown us that Asian Americans/ Pacific Islanders cannot dismiss Obama's comments as "elitist" but something that resonates close to our experiences and warrants real discussion).
